LETTERS

It was the night before Hurricane Gustav was expected to hit southern Louisiana, and wall-to-wall media coverage was predicting dire consequences. Time to do some serious praying. I turned to two recent Sentinels and the Christian Science Bible lesson for inspiration.

The August 18 issue featured three excellent articles on how "You can pray about Earth's weather." The writers emphasized the idea of God's complete control. Then I turned to the September 8 issue on "Safe from harm" and found a similar focus on God's supreme government.

Next I turned to the Christian Science Bible Lesson for the upcoming week on "Man" (September 1-7). Although I've often seen articles and lessons that were developed months earlier meet a current need, I was truly amazed by the timeliness, relevance, and abundance of the material available to lift and leaven our prayers. I have no doubt that the prayers of many resulted in Gustav doing much less damage than predicted.
