FULL FREEDOM REGAINED

One night late in 2005, I woke up my wife with a loud cry. I had attempted to get out of bed, but there was something wrong in my lower back that made any movement impossible, and the attempt painful.

At first, I declined my wife's offer of prayerful help—I wanted to pray about this, but felt I could manage on my own. I immediately began giving myself a Christian Science treatment by affirming the fact that because God is the only cause, this trouble had no real origin. Since God is good, it came from nowhere.

Instead of staying with this absolute fact, however, my thoughts drifted into the past and recalled an incident that had occurred about 30 years ago. A group of friends and I used to jump off bridges, rocks, and overhanging cliffs into the rivers below. On one such occasion, after jumping from a great height, I found myself in three feet of water, instead of the 12-foot depth I'd expected. I had experienced the same pain in my lower back that I was now dealing with. At that time, my friends rushed me to a hospital, where I was diagnosed with multiple fractures. Having not yet been introduced to Christian Science, I'd continued under medical treatment for several months, at the end of which the attending physician had pronounced me well. But he'd predicted that the injury would plague me later in life.
