CONCEPTION & BIRTH—THE SPIRITUAL BASIS

Contributing editor MARTA GREENWOOD once worked as a "labor ward sister" (midwife) in London's Guy's Hospital, one of the best-known and oldest teaching hospitals in the United Kingdom. Now a Christian Science practitioner and teacher in London, Marta continues to help mothers and fathers with pregnancy and childbirth through her prayer-based healing practice. She talked recently with Sentinel senior writer Warren Bolon.

What was it like, Marta, working in a major hospital and with so many mothers who were about to give birth?

As a labor ward sister, I saw birth very much as a physical, material, mechanical act. I never knew there was a spiritual dimension to life. If a woman came in and was in labor, and she wanted a natural childbirth, I thought she was completely wacky! Every birth at that time was medically monitored and assisted, but the medical community has come a long way to recognize a woman's right to have natural childbirth. I was one of a team of six labor ward sisters in charge of six delivery suites and two operating theaters, as well as the training of medical students, nurses, and midwives. So I was quite medically oriented concerning childbirth.
