THE CONFORMITY THAT LIBERATES

WALK NORTH On Massachusetts Avenue from our editorial offices in Boston, and you'll soon find yourself in front of a music school known primarily for training artists in rock, jazz, and other modern musical idioms. Given the nature of the contemporary music scene, it's probably fair to describe this international institution as a magnet school for nonconformists.

But don't even the coolest conform? Witness the crowd of music students gathered outside that school's classrooms on a recent lunch break. Not all, but many, were wearing a kind of school uniform—black jeans or skirts, black T's black jackets, black boots. Yes, that's a superficial judgment. And Jesus did say, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24). The Biblically based teachings on which this magazine is based show that each of us—and certainly each of our music-student neighbors—is a wholly unique and divine creation. In all essential ways we're actually spiritual beings, shaped and moved by the Holy Spirit, the one great Architect.
