PRAYER HELPED ME BREAK FREE FROM ASSAULT

During my freshman year of college on the East Coast of the United States, I dated a man who became physically abusive toward me. I ended the relationship, but since we attended a very small school, we periodically ended up in the same classes.

One Friday night before exams, we were in a study group together for one of our common classes. The group was meeting in his dorm room. As the group was breaking up, I found myself alone with him. I tried to go, but there was some arguing and he wouldn't let me leave. Just as I was headed for the door, he grabbed me and began strangling me. He then pushed me down onto the bed, immobilizing me, and pressed a pillow over my face. In that moment, I reached out to God for help with all my heart.

I'd been attending the local Christian Science Sunday School, and part of my weekly assignment had been to read the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly. Because Christmas just a few days away, the lesson for that week included the nativity story from the Bible.
