THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

AN OASIS OF CALM

During an August trip to Peru, a group of us planned a dune buggy ride into the desert to see the oasis of Huacachina. The oasis is just a few miles from the southern cities of Ica and Pisco, which eight days later were devastated by Peru's worst earthquake in 35 years. Ica can be seen in the distance, to the right.

By the time we were ready to set out, the sun was starting to go down, so I threw myself and my camera bag into the back of the buggy and encouraged our driver to speed away. As we bumped over sand dunes at 60 miles an hour, I began to wonder how I was going to keep a steady hand in the back of the vehicle and shoot photos through flying sand!

My opportunity came when the driver pulled over for us to see the oasis, which is a lush valley amid undulating sands that stretch as far as the eye can see. I framed the shot I wanted, and snapped a few pictures as another buggy sped away to our left. The images were good, but lacked something. So I tried again.
