HEALED BEFORE TESTIMONY MEETING

One Wednesday evening a few months ago, I was at home practicing the readings for that night's testimony meeting at my local Christian Science branch church. As First Reader, I regularly take some quiet time before each service to review the passages I've prepared from the Bible and Science and Health.

As I was practicing, my eye suddenly began to itch, and I rubbed it without thinking. Immediately, this eye began to feel very uncomfortable and irritated. When I looked in the mirror, I saw a blister had formed, which made it very difficult to see and to keep my eye open. Because I was supposed to read at church in about two hours, I became concerned about whether I should call a substitute and whether or not this person would even have enough time to get ready for the meeting.

Through my study of Christian Science, I had learned that quieting fear was the first step to healing. So I mentally turned my focus away from the physical problem and any concern regarding the logistics of the testimony meeting. Instead, I held to the spiritual fact that this testimony meeting was supported by divine Love and nothing could interfere with this rightful activity, since Love, God, was all-powerful. I affirmed that God was the very reason for this activity—a meeting to praise and testify of God's infinite goodness—so it must continue uninterrupted. This also meant that I should be able to fulfill my function as Reader without experiencing any irritation or discord.
