To feel it is to give it

"Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces." For weeks, this verse from a psalm of David graced every e-mail message I sent. I chose it because I felt it conveyed the hope the world cries after and that I wished everyone to feel and experience.

But how could I have missed the promise that follows: "For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee" (122:7, 8)?

Only when tranquillity flows irresistibly from one's own heart—to the neighbor next door and across an ocean, to companions on the highway, in the train or plane, to the child at our feet or down the block—can deep and far-reaching peace be truly possible.
