'A FORCE FOR PEACE'

LIBBY HOFFMAN is founder and director of Catalyst Peacebuilding. Her work brings members of religious communities together to end religiously motivated violence and resolve conflict. She earned her master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and has worked since that time in conflict resolution in a variety of capacities—including Middle East peacemaking, bringing together grassroots Israeli and Palestinian peacemakers, American policymakers, both Democrats and Republicans, and representatives of many faiths. Libby spoke with Staff Editor Ingrid Peschke from Libby's home in Falmouth, Maine.

Tell us about your background and what motivated you to focus your career on world peace initiatives.

In graduate school, I focused on international security studies, as well as negotiation and conflict resolution. Then, after taking some time off to be home with my boys, I took a teaching position in political science at Principia College. I taught several courses in conflict resolution—in fact, I helped my students organize a Public Affairs Conference on that very subject.
