"'HEALING HAS TRADITIONALLY taken place in the church until modern medicine took it out,' said Maggie Quisenberry, the parish nurse and health ministry manager at NorthEast Medical Center [in China Grove, North Carolina].
"The parish nurse program at NEMC started in 1997 and has become hugely successful in the community. ...
"The idea of parish nursing has lured many nurses into going back to their roots, to the place that taught them the significance of healing in the first place. The parish nurse program has 40 nurses in 44 congregations, mostly in Cabarrus and Rowan counties. Only nine of the nurses are paid—31 volunteer their time.
