HEALING LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF DANIEL

Some years ago, I had all the indications of a pregnancy, and engaged the services of a certified nurse midwife. But there were early signs that the situation was not a normal one. The midwife requested that I go to a hospital for testing.

The day after the tests, the examining obstetrician, who oversaw the midwife's practice, informed me that I had a molar pregnancy—there was no child, he explained, and the existing condition was potentially malignant. The prescribed medical treatment in this case included an immediate surgical operation, followed with biweekly testing for malignancy. Further, a natural elimination of the growth was considered too dangerous because of the possibility of unchecked hemorrhaging. Also, should the growth not be eliminated, I was told, it would continue to enlarge.

Because a child's life was not involved, I was not obligated under the laws of my state to follow the doctor's recommendations. I declined the operation. I spoke to an obstetrician in another area, who concurred with the method of treatment outlined by the first doctor, adding that I would find universal medical agreement on how to treat a case of this nature.
