THE POWER OF THE WORD!

WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, my favorite Sunday School classes were those in which we spent the entire class talking about one of Jesus' healings or teachings. I was always amazed that so many helpful insights could be found in just one Bible story.

In college Bible courses, I gained a new appreciation for many familiar passages as I learned the contexts in which they were written. It finally made sense why there were so many gospels. Each gospel author was retelling the story of Jesus' life in a way that would meet the needs of his or her audience.

Yet, it was not until my final semester in college that I really witnessed the truth of the Bible texts I had been studying. I had twisted my knee while playing basketball, so I showed up on crutches at a Bible workshop that I was required to lead. The workshop's title was a question posed by Mary Baker Eddy in her "Communion Hymn," "Felt ye the power of the Word?" (Poems, p. 75).
