SPIRITUAL FOCUS ON TV:

DANCING TOWARD INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

AMONG THE SUCCESSFUL "reality" shows that have been brought back to American network television this year, not many have the breadth of appeal of the wildly popular Dancing with the Stars.

This show makes me think of Mary Baker Eddy's observation: "The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible. Exceptions only confirm this rule, proving that failure is occasioned by a too feeble faith." She went on to point out that "had Blondin [the 19th-century French tightrope walker] believed it impossible to walk the rope over Niagara's abyss of waters, he could never have done it" (Science and Health, p. 199).

In Dancing with the Stars, almost everyone is trying to achieve something that would seem to be impossible—with the added challenge of new steps and different music every week. The television audience is well aware of this, and seems to appreciate the life lessons that glide across those gleaming hardwood floors.
