The most powerful remedy

Diane Uttley Marrapodi knows firsthand the powerful effects one can expect from treatment through THE MEDICINE OF MIND. As a Christian Science practitioner and teacher, she works with people from all walks of life to address and solve problems of all kinds through prayer, including physical illness and injury. Marrapodi lives with her husband, Lou, and their two children in Forest Hill, Maryland. Recently, Senior Writer Marilyn Jones talked with her about reliance on a spiritual, rather than a material, healing method.

Diane, Mary Baker Eddy stated, "God being All-in-all, He made medicine; but that medicine was Mind" (Science and Health, p. 142). How would you explain the concept that Mind—another name for God—is medicine?

First of all, I think we need to realize that Mary Baker Eddy did not make up these names for God. She discovered them in the Bible. For instance, she cited this verse from the book of Job: "He [God] is in one mind, and who can turn him? And what his soul desireth, even that he doeth" (23:13). This is just one of many reference throughout the Bible to God's name and nature as divine Mind. She also saw that God is Truth. And Spirit. For example, the book of John states, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (4:24).
