PAIN UNMASKED

One day about a year ago, I began experiencing considerable pain in one of my hands. The pain made normal use of the hand very difficult. Then a day spent with my two small grandchildren gave me an insight that led to a quick healing.

I took the children to a large store to shop. We walked through the store's many sections, some of them decorated for Berlin's carnival season. When we stopped at one display, I took a mask from a table, put it on my face, and turned to the eldest child, who is nearly three years old. His response wasn't the laughter I expected. He let out deafening screams and looked shocked.

The mask was very ugly, so perhaps it hadn't been a good choice. I took it off immediately, and comforted my grandson by showing him my real and very happy face. But he was still quite afraid. I showed him that he could take in his own hands the ugly "face" that had seemed so terrible, and squeeze it together—so there was no reason to feel threatened or in danger. My real face, I assured him, was unchanged.
