Newspapers throughout the world carried the picture of a sandy-haired golfer in white shirt, red vest, and dark pants raising a white-gloved hand as he paused on the historical Swilcan Bridge to acknowledge wave upon wave of warm, loving applause. And the headlines soared like well-timed Nicklaus drives:
