A MISSION OF GIVING

As news reports began airing about the aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina, PATTY WILSON, a Christian Science practitioner from Clearwater, Florida, knew what she was going to do. As she had done one year earlier after Hurricane Charlie, she would provide spiritual nourishment to thousands of people whose lives along the Gulf Coast had been devastated by storm damage. Piling boxes of copies of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures into her car, she began what turned out to be a month-long journey, driving first to Mississippi then on through Louisiana and into Texas.

Other Christian Scientists joined in this effort, including Patty's sister, Marilyn Milroy, from Evanston, Illinois, as well as volunteers from Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. By the time Patty returned home, she and the other volunteers had distributed more than 15,000 copies of Science and Health donated by individuals, Christian Science Reading Rooms across the country, and The Mother Church in Boston. According to Patty, the books were given out as quickly as they could be unboxed in Pascagoula, Gulfport, Baton Rouge, Kenner, Metairie, Lake Charles, and Houston.

Patty talked with Senior Writer Marilyn Jones about this mission of giving and about what inspired her to share the Comforter—Christian Science—with thousands of strangers.
