VAL KILMER

THE REAL DEAL

VAL KILMER'S REPUTATION precedes him. Or, more accurately, it dogs him wherever he goes.

On a warm September morning when I meet up with Val, who is in town to receive the Boston Film Critics' "Excellence in Film" award, I wonder about that bad-boy reputation. We tackle the subject head on:

"I've had a lot of slander, a lot of attacks in the press," he begins, "for a long time now, because I've gone my own way and expressed myself in the way I felt was appropriate." But he isn't defensive. "I'm sure I've made mistake and could have been more political," he acknowledges. "But I've realized that a lot of how I was dealing with this problem was accepting that somehow this slander was more real because it was in print."
