The only true 'good government'

As The Presidential Election Season kicks into high gear in the United States, Americans are sorting through an onslaught of political messages coming at them on the airwaves and in their mailboxes. But regardless of all the political jockeying, it's clear that everyone wants a good government. And not just in the United States, but everywhere.

This week's issue takes a look at what constitutes "good government"—from a spiritual perspective. First, Contributing Editor Richard Bergenheim writes about the process he goes through before voting—how he looks for good, inspired qualities in potential leaders, and other factors that promote spiritually progressive and fair policies. Looking at another aspect of this subject, Dan Enemark, a college student from California, addresses the importance of self-government, which for him is based on trusting God to guide him in every way, especially through academic pressures.

As both Richard and Dan have found, along with the other writers in this issue, no matter what system of government a people live under—even that of a tyrannical despot—ultimately God's laws constitute only real government of the universe. When we become aware of these laws of justice, goodness, fairness, and freedom, even as individuals, we can trust that God, who is the divine Mind, will give us the wisdom and discernment needed to open up new pathways and practical solutions.
