A CONTINUING SERIES ON HOW CHURCH IS ACTIVE IN PEOPLE'S LIVES
CHURCH LIVES
Blessings multiplied
Walking up the steps of a church in New England, I carried a burden of great sadness. I was just out of high school and about to leave my hometown. I was on my way to Washington, DC, to live with one of my sisters and her family and to look for a job. I had been ill and had a lot of fears about my future.
My visit to that church was the result of an invitation from another sister, and I had reluctantly agreed to attend the service. As I entered the door of the church—a branch Church of Christ, Scientist—I was impelled to stop for a moment. A message came clearly to thought: "Leave the burden outside." Somehow, I obeyed this impulse, dropped the mental burden I'd been carrying, and went into the service. After it was over, as I left the church, I realized that the heavy feeling was completely gone. I had expected to take it on again, but it was totally gone. I felt lighter than I had in months.
