The blessings of self-reliance
Heifer International helps impoverished families become more self-reliant through the gift of livestock. Begun in 1944, Heifer is a nonprofit organization rooted in the Christian tradition, which works with those of all faiths to help ensure the dignity and well-being of people everywhere. Today more than four million people from 110 countries and 35 US states have been helped to become self-reliant through the work of Heifer International.
Ray White, Public Information Director for Heifer International, talked recently with the Sentinel about the spiritual foundations of his organization, as well as his personal transformation through giving to others.
One of the cornerstones listed on Heifer International's website is spirituality. Tell us about that.
