Steps on the journey to peace
Around The World , Christians will soon be celebrating the coming of Christ and the promise of "peace on earth, and goodwill to men."
Maybe you've wondered, as I have, if this promise of peace is ever really going to come true in this world. That question was weighing me down as I listened to the car radio on my way home the other night. Then, unexpectedly, I was uplifted by a news report from Cuba. It was about a group of women whose husband had been jailed as dissidents by the Cuban regime.
They were not political, the women said. They were quiet, praying people. Because their husbands had suffered such terrible conditions in prison, these wives had felt impelled to speak out and take action—in spite of the fact that this endangered their own lives. With peaceful marches and protests, these "Women in White," as they called themselves, demanded improvements from the government for their loved ones—some of whom have since been released. The women's bold prayer-action apparently has achieved a measure of success that has surprised many.
