A choice for healing

One evening, just before going to bed, I noticed that one of my thumbs didn't look normal, and there was some mild discomfort. The next morning my thumb was red, swollen, and very tender to the touch. I found it difficult even to hold a toothbrush.

A passage from the Bible had been serving as a mainstay for me: "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." It continues, "... as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:15). These words have placed me at the crossroads of two worldviews—on the one hand, a perception of life and identity as physical and material; and on the other, a view of the universe as spiritual, created and maintained by Spirit, God. Choosing this spiritual view as the only reality has enabled me to have better control of what I experience—including physical challenges, large and small.

When I found my thumb in that troubling condition, my first thought was, What is going on here? I had already spent time praying early that morning, and the response that came to this question was the result of spiritual inspiration: "Nothing is going on here but God. There is no mystery. I know who God is—'the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal' (Science and Health, p. 587). God is my Father-Mother, whose loving care precludes anything harmful or hurtful."
