A CELEBRATION OF LIFE [NOV.17, 2004]

On Wednesday evening, November 17, The First Church of Christ, Scientist—also known as The Mother Church—opened its doors to host "A Celebration of Life" with hundreds of people from across Boston. The event was to honor Massachusetts' "Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month." After the presentations and speakers, First Reader, Lyle Young, conducted the Church's weekly testimony meeting, reading from the Bible and Science and Health. The meeting then opened to sharing testimonies of healing and the offering of prayer and brotherly love. In partnership with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, The Mother Church offered the community a sacred space for celebration, sharing, and healing. A precedent for this event was set in 1907, when President of The Mother Church, William McKenzie, hosted a service to support the International Peace Congress held at the Hague. At The Mother Church service on April 14 of that year, several notables delivered addresses to the thousand people in attendance.
