Health and healing: ours from God

In March 2002, I was in Monteverde, Costa Rica, where my wife and I spend several months each year. I had just returned from a Habitat for Humanity house-building project in Nicaragua. On the bus ride back to Costa Rica, I had felt a sharp pain in my left knee, and noticed that my leg had become quite swollen. I soon became unable to walk, and was confined to the first floor of our cabin home.

Because I had successfully relied on the teachings of Christian Science for healing all my life, I turned with confidence to scientific prayer. I had no doubt that healing would result. It hadn't occurred to me to linger over trying to determine what had caused the condition. I just felt that didn't have any bearing on the prayer that needed to be done to accomplish the healing.

I prayed for myself for a short time, and then e-mailed a good friend back in the States for additional help. My friend was quick to reply with inspiring passages from the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, which comforted me and strengthened my expectation of healing through spiritual means. While I was heartened and uplifted by the help I was receiving, after a week there was no apparent physical progress, and my friend recommended that I consider getting assistance from another Christian Scientist.
