A glimpse of spiritual identity heals
Originally published in El Heraldo de Christian Science
I began experiencing a disorder in my digestive functions. It seemed unimportant at first, but then became a severe hemorrhage after a few weeks. Since I'm accustomed to relying on prayer for healing, I turned to God on this occasion as well. I began to consider the fact that God created each one of us spiritually. I thought that if God is perfect and made us in His likeness, as the Bible indicates, then in reality I could not be subject to anything except that which orginates in God. I also thought about how my identity, made in the likeness of God, was spiritual and indestructible. Since God created all of us spiritual and perfect, what we perceive as an evil is really a mistake in our way of seeing what God has created.
In Science and Health I found this passage, which proved very helpful: "When false human beliefs learn even a little of their own falsity, they begin to disappear. A knowledge of error and of its operations must precede that understanding of Truth which destroys error, until the entire mortal, material error finally disappears, and the eternal verity, man created by and of Spirit, is understood and recognized as the true likeness of his Maker" (p. 252).
Although I continued to pray and insist on understanding what I was reading in Science and Health, the problem didn't improve. Sometimes I thought I didn't have the ability to heal myself through prayer, and I'd feel discouraged. But I persevered, striving for a better understanding of the truth that Spirit has formed me in His image and likeness, and that therefore I had a right to be healthy.
