Poetry of our love

During My Christmases as a young wife and mother, I sometimes thought about what meaningful traditions might become ours with the passage of years.

A friend told me about her delight in surprising her husband with gifts of gold jewelry and a cashmere coat. I wondered whether her husband might feel uncomfortable if his present to her were not as magnificent.

Then I thought: Will I ever be able to afford such gifts for my own husband? Do people decide ahead how much to spend on each other? Are they always pleased? Are they honest in their responses? Does the typical scenario of advancing in one's career automatically translate into spending more and more each year?
