Holiday bounty

Christmas has always been my favorite season. But it lost some of its sparkle a few years ago when I went through a divorce. Suddenly I was head of the household, with four children to raise. Funds were tight, and I wondered how I could possibly afford a holiday dinner and presents for the kids.

One afternoon shortly before Christmas, I was driving home with my daughter Amy, who was 12 at the time, when the anxiety about money struck me forcibly. This time, I decided to pray about my concern. I had learned to trust God while I was going through the divorce some months earlier, and now, with even greater confidence, I knew I could rely on God to take care of this situation.

I spoke aloud in the car so that Amy could hear me and join in the spirit of my prayer, which included the Bible's words that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1).
