A life-changing Christmas gift

As a young adult, I had a deep desire to make a contribution to others with my life, through the opportunities God gave me.

After I married and became a mother of two beautiful children, as well as a foster parent for a time, it became necessary for me to return to full-time work. This meant giving up other activities that I loved—teaching Sunday School and serving as Junior Missionary Association Secretary in the local Methodist church where I was a member. I had cherished these duties because I loved teaching children about God and, in the latter case, about the lifestyles of children in other countries. Giving up these activities brought on a personal crisis of self-doubt. Church life was an integral part of who I was. I felt as if I had become a quitter. Had I really needed to give up what I loved doing?

As the Christmas season drew near that year, there just didn't seem to be enough hours in the day. I became so exhausted with what seemed like overwhelming demands that I couldn't think straight.
