Unable to walk . . . still able to pray
I asked, "Father, what is it that You want me to do here?"
I went to a Christian Science church as a kid, and had a number of healings as I was growing up. When I was sick, my parents, who were not Christian Scientists, went with the maxim "If we see rapid progress in 24 hours through your prayer, great. Otherwise, off to the clinic."
With prayer, I generally avoided the clinic 95 percent of the time and had some quite remarkable healings.
Years later, I was with my first wife, walking in a park in California. We were in a remote area of the park on the way to see some Native American petroglyphs. And on the rocky path, I took a real fall. There was a sickening crack. It felt like my ankle was broken. I was in intense pain and couldn't put any weight on it at all.
