Rescue at sea

In October of 1999, my wife and I were in Hawaii. The last day we were there, I went swimming. The surf was running between eight and ten feet, but being an excellent swimmer, I wasn't concerned.

Once in the water, however, I discovered that there was an underwater rip tide. In less than 30 seconds, I was swept more than 100 yards out to sea. There, the size of the waves was up to 20 feet. The situation did not look good.
