A transforming encounter

The man and I stood there, practically touching, with this thought of our harmlessness hanging between us.

I went to college at Columbia University in New York City. Coming from the small village of Montgomery in upstate New York, I wasn't used to the "rules" of living in a big city. During my first few weeks at college, I decided very late one night to take a walk through a park near my dorm. I wanted to think through some of the many issues confronting me as a brand new freshman at a large university in the biggest city in the country.
