THE BIBLE—trusted family friend

The Sentinel Asked Readers to send in stories and pictures of family Bibles to celebrate National Bible Week. The following pages show a sampling of the many contributions we received.

Whether a family heirloom or a new-found companion, the Bibles our readers talked about share one common theme—each has been a trusted friend.

The wood-covered Bible that was handed down to me through the family is a Chinese New Testament. In 1888 my grandparents were English missionaries in China, when they met on a steamer going up the Yangtze River. They were married in February 1891. Grandpa gave Grandma this Bible, and they both could read it in Chinese. Four of their five children were born in China. My father, Cyril, was one of them.
