your INSIGHTS

The Sentinel has recently received an extraordinary number of contributions. Because of space constraints, we cannot publish them all. But we felt our readers would like to know about some of the wonderful ideas these articles contain.

So beginning this week, we will present from time to time excerpts from articles that are especially relevant and insightful. So look for "Your Insights" in coming weeks!

We have no reason now to indulge in hatred. It would only consume us. God's love expressed in us moment by moment is our best weapon. Our thoughts are the battleground. Our world is demanding that we yield our thoughts to God. The strength of society everywhere on earth is in spiritual purity—expressed in the love that brings goodness and peace to everyone.

A friend once said how important it is to put on the whole armor of God every day, first thing, and keep it on—to practice turning to God moment by moment before disaster strikes. So when we're faced with walking "through the valley of the shadow of death," we can feel "Love's rod and Love's staff" comforting us—because we've practiced knowing what that feels like in the good times.

Let us be a people of love and charity, like the workers who bring aid to those affected by acts of terrorism. Let us be strong in love and draw strength from these words: "Charity has the courage of conviction; it may suffer long, but has neither the cowardice nor the foolhardiness to cover iniquity. Charity is Love; and Love opens the eyes of the blind, rebukes error, and casts it out. Charity never flees before error, lest it should suffer from an encounter. Love your enemies, or you will not lose them; and if you love them, you will help to reform them" (Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellaneous Writings, p. 210).

I am reminded of the conflicts and terror that faced Jesus. At one point, the ship he was in was threatened with destruction and disaster (see Mark 4:36—41). In the midst of his disciples' fear for their lives in the storm at sea, they awakened Jesus. Rather than jumping into their storm, however, he lifted them into his own peace. He ended the storm with three powerful words: "Peace, be still.... and there was a great calm."

After World War II, by overturning the Morgenthau Plan and adopting the Marshall Plan, the American people extended real compassion and practical love to the people they had just defeated in one of the bloodiest wars of all time. The American people thus demonstrated a capacity for forgiveness and humanity in the face of bitter loss that will stand as a lasting reminder. We send our prayers to the decisionmakers of the civilized world to find the strength and wisdom to take action as required without forgetting the very real power of forgiveness and compassion.

I was working in 7 World Trade Center (next door to the twin towers) at the time of the attack. Although a major crisis was happening around us, everyone was calm as they descended the stairs. I saw many people come to the aid of others who were frightened. While in the stairwell, walking down 42 flights of stairs, I thought that at any moment our building would be in jeopardy as well. I realized that I was not in control of this situation, but God was. In fact, at that point I truly felt that mortal man is in control of nothing. God would lead me and put me in the right place.

We all evacuated the buiding safely, and I was able to find my wife, Heather. I was glad to be safe, but I also prayed for those still trapped and for their families. My father-in-law, Rich, told me that he prayed about something he remembered from the Bible, where it mentions a legion of angels. I know that on that day a legion of angels was there, guiding many people in the city.

Later that afternoon, the building I worked in collapsed. I realized that everyone's prayers had helped to evacuate the buiding and get everyone out safely.
