'Don't forget your helmet'

Many a mother has called out that reminder to a bicycle-riding child. While the helmet we're going to talk about here offers essential protection, it is far more useful than something put on your head.

In the Bible, helmet signifies "the hope of salvation" (I Thess. 5:8). This hope is invaluable. It is spiritual armor. It protects us against discouragement. It helps us engage in the warfare against evil.

I learned the importance of hope several years ago when I found myself on the frontline in a war against drugs. A teacher in our high school in Evanston, Illinois, confided a big concern to me. She had assigned autobiographical essays to her class. When they were turned in, she found them filled with accounts of the students' experimentation with drugs.
