A MESSAGE OF LOVE from Berlin

Candles at one of the several vigils held in Berlin in response to the terrorist attack on the United States.

Tuesday evening in Berlin, just hours after the terrible attacks against humanity, I open the windows of my office. From various directions I hear the sound of church bells filling the air. On the TV, I see people attending church services, praying silently with candles in their hands.

For decades, my part of Berlin was the home for thousands of American soldiers and civilians protecting the freedom of my city. Their uniforms, which were very noticeable in the streets, were a symbol of their determination to protect this town. The message was clear: Don't be afraid, don't give up; we'll stay together.

Tonight there are different symbols. Flowers. Candles. Hands folded in prayer from many Berliners. This is a message of determination as well: Don't be afraid, dear Americans. Don't give up; we'll stay together. Prayer can and will save lives. Prayer is powerful, where words sound vain. There is one God, ever present, touching the hearts, comforting and healing.
