I heard God call

I lay on an altar, Lord,
To subtle and foolish sin.
The world is wide, I thought,
And full—
I struggled to enter in.

Then the world finally took
what I had to give
And scoffed at my unclad soul.
"This child hasn't learned the score," they said,
"Nor has she paid the toll."

"So we'll teach her this and teach her that,
We'll never let her go!"

But I suddenly saw a brilliant light;
I knew not from where it came.
I got up and followed and thought
How strange—
For I heard God call my name.

Take the gate that's narrow,
The road that's straight.
Take no thought for what others say;
For to know the truth is freedom, Jesus taught,
To keep you on the way.

Now clothed in a contrite heart, O God,
I walk alone with You!
