"Can you read lips?" my frustrated dinner partner exclaimed. She was trying to explain something to me, but I couldn't understand what she was saying. For some time I had been suffering from a loss of hearing in one ear, and now I seemed to be losing the ability to hear in my one good ear.

I could hear with both ears, equally well.
