"How manifold are thy works!"

Wendy Paulson shares some of her joy in nature conservation.

Within a few weeks, The Nature Conservancy of New York will be launching its spring bird walks in Central Park. The leader will be Wendy Paulson, vice-chairman of the international board of governors of The Nature Conservancy. She is also a volunteer teacher in the New York public schools, encouraging eleven-and twelve-year-olds to get closer to nature, even if they live among high-rise buildings in the Bronx.

We chatted with Mrs. Paulson before the snow had left the Ramble and North Woods in Central Park. Already, her excitement was clearly evident as she waited for her first glimpse of the mass movement of birds from their wintering grounds to their summer breeding grounds.

"For me it's such a thrill," she said, "such a joy to be reacquainted with birds I consider old friends. This is the compensation for living in the city—the keen anticipation of the drama that goes on here every year, yet which is largely unseen and unknown to vast numbers of people as they hustle to and from their workplaces.
