As A Young Woman, Mary Slessor, a Scot, longed to preach the gospel in Africa, In 1875, when she was twenty-seven, her wish was granted by the Foreign Mission Board of the United Presbyterian Church. Once she arrived in West Africa, she found many areas of concern.

Women were little more than chattel. Twins were routinely killed because of the belief that one of them had been fathered by an evil spirit. Education was virtually nonexistent, and slavery was common. The young Scot's heart was deeply moved, and she began doing her best to change conditions, particularly in relation to twins. Since no one would take these children, she began to raise them herself. She never married. Instead, she poured out her life preaching the gospel, establishing schools, saving children and women, and helping men gain a higher understanding of who they were as God's offspring.
