WHAT'S WIND GOT TO DO WITH GOD?

My experience with a hurricane took place several years ago when "Fran" hit our area. Besides the hurricane's unrelenting all-night whistling and crashing, tornadoes also came through roaring like freight trains, twisting and uprooting trees, destroying houses and cars—whatever happened to be in their way.

When I first heard the warnings that the storm was coming, I wanted something reassuring to cling to. I found this description of wind in Science and Health: "That which indicates the might of omnipotence and the movements of God's spiritual government, encompassing all things" (p. 597). I remember thinking, "Then I don't need to be afraid of wind." That conviction never left me throughout all the noisy darkness of the next twelve hours.

In the first light of morning, as neighbors picked their way over and under fallen trees, one woman who hadn't spoken to others on our block for a year and a half came down the hill, declaring that an experience like that was very humbling. She has remained friendly and loving to everyone since that day.
