WORKPLACE

Who's the boss anyway?

"I stood in awe of God's ability to adjust whatever is needed to bring harmony and order."

The workplace was in an uproar. Our supervisor had given an order that no one liked. The staff was complaining. No one thought the decision was immoral or unethical, just foolish and unnecessary. Then the day came when it was my turn to follow through with the new directive.

I started the morning by reading the Weekly Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, but I seemed unable to focus on what I was reading, so I prayed for God's guidance. With my consciousness bowed in prayer, the thought came that the Bible Lesson contained the daily bread I needed for all the activities of my day.

The Bible was opened to the story of Solomon, who became king after the death of David, his father. Solomon asked God for an understanding heart to make good judgments in governing the people. God was pleased with the request and said, "Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart" (I Kings 3:11, 12).
