Prayers that helped my friend and me

From unconsciousness to a full recovery

This Past Fall, my former brother-in-law, Gary, who is also a good friend, was stricken with acute pancreatitis. He was placed in the intensive-care unit of a local hospital and treated medically. Withing a few days, however, he lapsed into unconsciousness and remained in this condition for nearly a month. The picture was bleak.

I wondered what I could do. He was living in a distant state, and I knew he had no particular interest in Christian Science or spiritual healing. Still, I realized that there was something I could do. I vowed to keep my own thoughts about the situation focused on God. This, I knew, would be doing something powerful.

That week, in studying the Bible, I found this statement: "Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead ..." (Eph. 5:14). I felt that was just what was needed in this situation. As it turned out, though, my friend Gary wasn't the only one who needed to awaken and arise. I did, too.
