GOD AS STRONG TOWER
God is a strong tower. That's an assurance that God enables each of us to keep a right perspective on life, looking out from the embrace of God's love.
If a dad is walking through a crowd with his small boy or girl, often the safest place for the child to be is on top of the dad's shoulders. That way there is less opportunity for the little one to be pulled away from the father's hand. Sometimes the child asks to be carried because it takes too long to get where they're going, and it's always more fun to see stuff from up there than from around everyone's knees.
One of the basic commands of Jesus is to "Watch," and it's a lot easier to do that from a place high above ground, from the spiritual perspective that God provides. This way of watching is what the Bible calls "bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (II Cor. 10:5). God as strong tower helps us distinguish between what thoughts are good and what thoughts are evil. It's tempting to be alarmed by bad thoughts, and if we aren't quick to dismiss them, they can lure us into acting on them. But God as strong tower means that God keeps us close to Him and makes us feel His love so that we don't mistake ourselves as anything less than good, because of being His child.
