Spiritual understanding removes unsightly growth
A few years ago, a growth appeared on my face. I looked at it in the mirror frequently. This went on for about two weeks. It continued to grow and evidenced other disturbing symptoms. Although I had relied on prayer for healing when I was ill, there was a period in my life when I did not follow the moral teachings of Christian Science. During that time, a growth appeared on my thigh, and I had it removed medically.
This time I was committed to living the teachings of Christian Science, and I thought about many experiences that had proved to me that this is an effective, scientific healing method. Still, I found myself thinking that if the growth did not disappear through prayer, I could have it removed medically. Almost at the same time, the word liability flashed in my mind. I turned to this passage in Science and Health: "We think that we are healed when a disease disappears, though it is liable to reappear; but we are never thoroughly healed until the liability to be ill is removed." Toward the end of the same paragraph, the author writes, "... the cause of disease must be obliterated through Christ in divine Science, or the so-called physical senses will get the victory" (pp. 230-231). I could see that this was an opportunity to prove man's identity, my identity, as a spiritual idea of God, Spirit.
This was the exact opposite of viewing identity as a material body with a physical problem. I prayed to realize that I couldn't be liable, or open to entertaining in thought, anything undesirable or unappealing, since God, Spirit, couldn't create anything objectionable in consciousness, and therefore certainly not on my face. I knew that a medical procedure wouldn't remove the liability to suffer from such growths.
