To Our Readers

A Favorite Christmas experience? For many, that would be tough to pinpoint. It's a little like naming your favorite song—no sooner do you name one, than two or three other favorites come to mind.

But somewhere around the top of the list for me was a large gathering of family and friends on Christmas Day, when someone asked if everyone in the room would take a few moments out of the festivities to describe something he or she was sincerely grateful for. The room got very quiet. One at a time we each began describing the people, events, conversations, or actions that had moved us or met a great need in some way. By the time we finished, I'm sure there wasn't an untouched heart in the house. It wasn't so much an emotional experience as it was a spiritual one. The uplifting, healing power of God—the Christ—had touched us.

There's a lot more to be said about this powerful divine influence, as you'll see when you read our Cover Story from Richard Bergenheim. We'd also like to call your attention to a special "Family Matters" column, where people from a variety of faiths tell how they cultivate in their children a love of spiritual things. In a way, their responses remind me of that gathering of years ago, listening to people from all walks of life describe what has brought great meaning and good into their lives. We hope that you enjoy what this week's Sentinel has gathered together for you, and that it touches you with the same uplifting spirit that represents the real meaning of Christmas.
