WORKPLACE

Are you limiting yourself?

"As I stood at the kitchen sink I heard this thought within my consciousness: 'But you've never been out of God's employment.' "

AFTER STAYING AT HOME and being a full-time wife and mother for fifteen years, I decided that I would like to return to the workplace full time.

I was a qualified teacher, and during those fifteen years had taught piano pupils and been busy with church and charity work, but I had been out of the workplace and had very little teaching experience on my CV (curriculumvitae or resume). In addition, I heard on the television that there were 38,000 teachers unemployed in England and Wales, and graduating students were having difficulty finding jobs. I applied for seven jobs but didn't even get an interview. I contributed to this discouraging situation by telling myself that my teaching methods were probably out of date, too.

I decided to pray about this. I turned from this limiting outlook to view my situation from the spiritual perspective prayer gives. I realized that God was my real employer, and He had a mission and purpose for me. As with all His children, I was an essential part of His spiritual creation, and there would always be opportunities for me to use my talents and abilities in His service. I was conscious of St. Paul's reminder, "It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:13). I was willing to accept this truth.
