Q A
Q I would like to know how the Christian Science Church feels about a woman's right to choose abortion. I realize that the Church probably doesn't condone abortion, but is it absolutely opposed to a woman's making this choice (as some other religions are)?
A The short answer to your question is that the Church does not instruct members as to the position they should take. The Church leaves personal (and political) decisions to the individual, based on his or her own highest sense of right.
The longer answer involves this Church's commitment to spiritual healing—and more broadly, to spiritual values. Christian Scientists deeply cherish all life. They place strong emphasis on the need for moral conduct and responsibility, particularly as it affects family life and the raising of children. They believe that adherence to the moral law of the Ten Commandments and the Christian standard as taught by Christ Jesus heals the moral laxity that so often leads to unwanted pregnancies.
