Q A

Q Do Christian Scientists believe that Jesus will return in what other Christians refer to as the "second coming" to save all who believe in him?

A We do believe in the second coming of Christ, although perhaps not in the same way some other denominations do.

The second coming of Christ, to us, is the Comforter promised by Jesus (see John 14:16, 26; John 15:26; John 16:7, 13). We believe this Comforter—the "Spirit of truth" who "will guide you into all truth," who "shall testify of me," and who "shall teach you all things"—is not someone in a human form. It is the divine message, the revelation, of the truth of God and man. Its appearance brings freedom from sin, disease, and death. Christian Scientists believe that this truth has been revealed for all mankind and is explained in the Bible and in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The author writes, "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science" (p. 55).
