Calm during a crisis

One recent incident has proved to me very powerfully that God is ever present and that we are never apart from His goodness.

In July of last year my wife and I were in an automobile accident. While we were on vacation, the pickup truck we were in left the highway, rolled over at least twice, and landed on its side in a ditch, facing in the opposite direction. Even while this was occurring, I never felt for an instant that God was not with me and my wife. There was no fear, and the feeling of God's presence was ex tremely strong.

I never felt for an instant that God was not with me and my wife.

My wife was the first to climb out through the back window. I took longer to unlatch my seat belt, but then followed her. Although this was a remote area, I had no sooner got out of the truck than a passerby stopped to help. Another person lent us a cell phone, so my wife was able to call a Christian Science practitioner. I also spoke with the practitioner.

By this time paramedics and police were on the scene and were insisting that my wife be taken to the hospital. We explained that we were Christian Scientists, but the officer was not comfortable with our refusal. We agreed to go, and asked to be taken to a quiet room where my wife could be cleaned up and we could pray. The officer and paramedics were more than agreeable to this, and the problem was resolved.

At the hospital my wife was cleaned up and released. The police officer took us to a local motel, and not an hour later the tow company came by with our truck, filled with our belongings, which had been scattered all over the road. They had already retrieved my wife's purse and brought it to her at the hospital.

The suggestion of being traumatized had to be confronted throughout that first night and the next. Holding to the fact that there are no accidents in God's creation got us through the next two days and beyond. It brought calm to the situation and began our healing.

The day after the accident we saw clear evidence of God's ever-presence. A rental car was delivered to us and, although it was a small sub-compact, it held everything we needed. When we went to the salvage yard to inspect the truck, we found that even though it was totaled, almost everything we had in it had survived unharmed!

The accident had occurred on a Monday, and by that Wednesday we were able to get home. The love of family and friends provided for us completely. My recovery from cuts and bruises, a swollen shoulder, and an injured ear was soon complete. Both of us have had tremendous spiritual growth from this experience, and I am extremely grateful to God for the healings we've had.
